Dogs on Metrolink – Councillors Decide on Friday

by prestwichfocus on 2 November, 2015

On Friday members of the Transport for Greater Manchester Authority will be meeting to consider the issue of dogs on trams. At present only assistant dogs are allowed (hearing and sight dogs).

Please sign our petition to Transport for Greater Manchester to allow the carriage of dogs on trams.

Councillors considered the issue earlier in the year after a consultation with the public and Metrolink Users found that 71% of people were in favour of allowing dogs on trams, some of whom felt that there should be some sort of restrictions (e.g. child ticket, off peak).

Now the recommendation of the T4GMC Officers is that ONLY dogs in a secure carrying box should be allowed on Metrolink – which obviously makes a journey highly impractical for all but the smallest of dogs. Read the report here.

Metrolink is extremely unusual in NOT allowing dogs on board. Dogs are free to travel on buses in Greater Manchester and are free to travel on trains across the country. Even in urban areas dogs can travel on the London Underground and on the Tyne and Wear Metro. The Croydon Tramlink, which is an almost identical system to Metrolink with similar two-carriage trams, allows dogs on board.

Many people would probably find it sensible that there would be sensible rules and restrictions. Other transport systems obviously require dogs to be on a lead, not on seats, and well behaved. Given how busy Metrolink is in the rush-hour, it might even be sensible to restrict dogs to off-peak hours.

Please sign our petition to Transport for Greater Manchester to allow the carriage of dogs on trams and let your friends know!

    Dogs are ace

  2. Sheila Harrison says:

Discretion should be used on an individual basis of judging according to behaviour.
If a dog fouls or doesn’t behave and the owner doesn’t address this then a photograph should be taken and then posted on the metrolink stations banning those responsible.
Even a small fee of say 75p per dog should be introduced.

  3. Joyce Pritchard says:

I agree that dogs should be Able to travel on trams during off peak , you can travel on a bus and a train so why not the tram , people have to travel with their animals at times and must dog owners are responsible

  4. Raj sangha says:

How are you suppose to take them to the vets if they are banned on public transport!?

  5. Beverley says:

We take our dogs to Spain and they have got it right on the local train. Off peak only and muzzled. One dog per person and it works well

  6. lyn Spenco says:

There are enough animals travelling on the trams at night without them having intimidating dogs as well. if you cant cage your dog then it should be muzzled. I am a dog lover and dog owner.

  7. Lynn Norton says:

Most dogs are better behaved that the schoolchildren who use the tram in the Prestwich area! You can’t ban them. Please be sensible, allow dogs on trams.

  8. Louise Ellis says:

Great idea, being able to travel further a field with my dog will be wonderful, although I appreciate not everyone would agree.

  9. gary says:

all dogs should be allowed because they are part of the family

  10. Amy Donaldson says:

It’s very backward not to allow them. Just back from a short trip to London where I saw multiple well behaved dogs on what is a much busier transport network.

  11. Natalie Sorfleet says:

Not everyone can afford a car. The buses allow dogs on at 50p. Pretty please let dogs travel.

  12. Jette Hirshals-Fleming says:

    Great idea ?

  13. Sarah mulvaney says:

I don’t agree with dogs being aloud on the metrolink for the reason that my son has allergies and it would cause him a severe allergic reaction..we use the metrolink weekly and for the risk of my son’s health because of this petition I’m strongly against it…i love dogs but for my son’s health I really cannot sign for it

  14. Joe Bird says:

Seems silly not to use it regular seen plenty of dogs never had a problem with them….Teenagers now thats another matter

  15. Megan says:

I think dogs should be allowed on metrolink trams because. I am a teenager and I have a staffy dog, who’s so loving and so friendly and would never hurt a soul and I have never been allowed on a metrolink tram with her. It’s hard for me to go to different places with her like sale water park or Wythenshawe park because I do not have a car to drive her. Yet all the time I am seeing adults and the elderly being let on with dogs and not being told no. It’s unfair how some people are allowed on metrolink trams with their dogs and others like me have never been allowed on with her.

  16. Ann Arthur says:

Yes, they are allowed on the buses so why not the trams? off peak though…..

  17. Anon says:

I hope it us unsuccessful, dogs shouldn’t not be allowed on trams unless of course it’s a guide or hearing dog
