Preventing Car Crime in Prestwich

by prestwichfocus on 10 January, 2013

The local Police have issued crime statistics that compare December 2012 with a year before, December 2011. While most types of crime have reduced or remain steady, there is a worrying increase in car crime in the Prestwich area as this graph shows. (The blue bars are December 2012 – vehicle crime the fourth figure in.)

We can all help reduce car crime. The following advice is from the Police:

Vehicle crime – don’t become their next victim – protect yourself

Did you know …

  • Almost all vehicle crime is preventable. It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car. An opportunist thief will be attracted to your vehicle if they believe there is something of value they can steal. So if at all possible, leave nothing on view.
  • Never leave valuable items in your car, including removable radio cover, laptop, phone, bags, sunglasses, or your Sat Nav. Do you really need all those things you keep in the glove box?
  • Wipe away the Sat Nav mark on your windscreen. Your local NPU Team have special wipes to remove the suction imprint.
  • Consider fitting anti-tamper screws to your number plate.
  • Never leave your car keys where they can be seen from the front door.

Vehicle common sense

Always

  • Close the windows and sunroof; lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your car unattended.
  • Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time. If possible, park in a busy, well-lit area.

Never

  • Leave cash, credit cards, chequebook, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the car.
  • Never leave your keys in the car, even for a second – treat them as you would your cash and credit cards.
