Bus Lane Enforcement Cameras

by prestwichfocus on 29 October, 2013

At Bury’s last full Council meeting my colleague Cllr Tim Pickstone asked a question about the amount of money Bury has collected in from Bus Lane Enforcement Fines.

(People will be familiar with the little camera car that sits next to bus lanes at a number of sites, particularly along the route of the 135 to Bury, and some of the main routes out of Bury town centre towards Rochdale and Bolton.)

The answer:

In 2011/12 – £271,000 in fines
In 2012/13 – £201,719

The Council put the reducing level down to a ‘greater level of compliance’ in the bus lanes, and that this had been expected when drawing up the income budget for these items.

This led Tim to ask whether there was any other uses which the ‘camera car’ could be used for. One suggestion Tim made was to see if we can tackle the serious problem of illegal parking outside of schools. Obviously there is nothing wrong with dropping children off at school, but a small minority of parents can cause danger by illegally parking on the ‘zig-zag’ area or on yellow lines.

Apparently the Council will take forward this suggestion and see if the camera car can be used in this way.

The Prestwich and Whitefield Guide wrote up the story here.

It could be used in some of the so called 20mph. zones. In Ostrich Lane since they put the 20mph signs down the vehicles seem to be going faster. Alot of them could not observe the 30mph never mind the 20mph, and the same seems to be the case on Whittaker Lane.
