Bury New Road in Prestwich Village – Your Views

by prestwichfocus on 6 May, 2014

A number of residents have been in touch to ask about the report in the Prestwich and Whitefield Guide about the possible ‘singling’ of Bury New Road.

Residents will be aware that the Council has (finally) agreed to invest £1/2 million (£500,000) in the Bury New Road area of Prestwich to address the traffic issues here and improve the village area.

The Guide reports that the Council is to consult on proposals to make Bury New Road ‘single lane’ – potentially all the way from Fairfax Road to Church Lane, with the wider pavements to be used for trees, street art of possibly a cycle lane. Apparently we are to be consulted on this proposal over the summer months.

We are interested to know what your views are at this early stage, before the formal consultation.

We are concerned that the only option being considered seems to be the ‘singling’ of Bury New Road. It may be that there are other ways to improve the village – particularly looking at better off-road parking facilities or making the most of existing car parks by ensuring by guaranteeing some ‘short stay’ places.

We worry that if there is any bottleneck created on Bury New Road coming off the Motorway, then this will send more traffic down Bury Old Road and more ‘rat run’ traffic on our residential streets like Heywood Road / Rectory Lane.

Making Bury New Road a single lane will only add chaos to what is now a nightmare of a road to negotiate through Prestwich Village. I would be much in favour of making it 2 lanes all the way up from Scholes Lane/Hilton Lane/Bury New Road up to the motorway. We don’t need wider pavements or a lot of extra trees, we need less congestion. I am not sure though why the council say they want our opinions – in my experience they will do what they want to do whether or not local residents agree.

Whoever thought of making Bury New Road a single lane obviously does not use the road very much. Not only is congestion caused by traffic and parking, the fact that we now have 3 major supermarkets within such a short distance from one another, plus access to the motorway, are much more of issues. Perhaps giving planning permission to yet more restaurants and pubs is another issue – I would like to see more shops which we can use – less hairdressers as well and tattoo artists!

Impossible to square the circle – a bypass will never be afforded and risks blighting the Village. But that idea might restore a village like atmosphere for local people.

A four lane clearway would speed traffic flow which in turn would be bad for Village businesses.

However, slowing the traffic more creates more fumes, more pollution, and the afternoon rush hour queues will tailback to Manchester city centre, not just to The Cliff, as now.

PS Steve – is “singling” an English word? 🙂 Verb “to single” – very inventive of you.

I am against the proposed change,
    1) it will add to the existing congestion especially at peak rush hours times when people are go to and coming from work.
    2) it will push a proportion on to other routes which will be equally if not more inconvenient (Bury Old Road) or more dangerous ( Heywood Road).
    3) I am not convinced that there is demand for additional walking space but there is obviously a need for à more speedy throughway for traffic ( on or two thoughtlessly parked cars by the road side can cause tailbacks even at off peak times.
    4) I have no faith that this is truly up for consultation . This proposal was part of a previous plan for the area which also include road charging. when that proposal was defeated in a democratic ballot it had to be dropped. However, it looks likes the planners will keep reintroducing their plans until it is accepted. It appears to be part of a long term plan to make road usage by private car an inconvenience. I am fortunate that I live in Segdely rather than those more unfortunates whip live in Whitefield but work in Manchester.
